Generative AI Certification

Generative AI

Why certify in Generative AI?

Generative AI provides a comprehensive introduction to artificial intelligence concepts, AI-powered tools, and prompt engineering practices in educational and professional settings. Through topics such as generative AI foundations, large language models, content creation, image and multimedia generation, prompt design, verification of AI-generated content, and responsible AI use, learners develop the knowledge needed to effectively interact with, evaluate, and apply AI technologies across a wide range of tasks. A Generative AI certification allows students and job seekers to demonstrate their understanding of modern AI tools and best practices, while supporting their academic success, digital confidence, and long-term career readiness in an increasingly AI-enabled world.

A Generative AI certification measures foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts and practical skills in using AI-powered tools, with no prerequisites. It is well suited for students and adult learners who want to validate their understanding of generative AI technologies, large language models, prompt engineering, content generation, multimedia creation, and the ethical and responsible use of AI systems. The certification helps learners demonstrate their readiness to effectively use, evaluate, and apply AI tools across a variety of educational and professional contexts.

Skills Assessed

The Tosa Generative AI certification exam evaluates four key domains:

Foundations and Evolution of Generative AI

Questions in this domain cover the fundamental concepts, history, and evolution of artificial intelligence, with a focus on generative AI technologies. It includes the different categories of AI, the role of GPTs and large language models (LLMs), common AI terminology, input and output types, as well as the architectures, systems, and limitations behind modern AI tools.

Technologies and Applications

Questions in this domain cover the practical use of generative AI tools for text, image, video, and audio creation. It includes selecting appropriate AI tools, generating and transforming content, creating multimedia outputs, customizing AI models, and understanding the capabilities of major AI platforms across different use cases and media types.

Working with AI Tools

Questions in this domain cover prompt engineering techniques used to generate accurate, relevant, and context-aware AI outputs. It includes writing and refining prompts, controlling tone and style, applying prompting strategies such as zero-shot and chain-of-thought prompting, using contextual documents and prior conversations, and verifying the reliability and accuracy of AI-generated content.

Societal, Economic, and Ethical Challenges

Questions in this domain cover the ethical, legal, and societal implications of generative AI. It includes AI bias, intellectual property, copyright, privacy, misinformation, human oversight, responsible AI usage, and the broader impact of AI on work, creativity, accessibility, and society.

Exam Conditions

Tosa certification exams are not open book. The certification tests must be taken in a secure environment and are proctored at all times in accordance with the Tosa Exam Policy. Adaptive testing produces a unique sequence of items for each candidate, reducing the risk of cheating and item memorization. In-person and remote proctoring options are available.

Validity and Retakes

The certification is valid for 3 years. Earners may retest anytime to improve their score or to maintain their certification. There is a minimum 24-hour waiting period between two retakes. Candidates receive a new version of the test with each attempt.

Score, Proficiency Level, and Award

The result of the exam is a numeric score between 1 and 1000 points associated to a proficiency level. It is calculated using a pattern-scoring model (IRT). The minimum score required to earn the certification is 551. Certification earners receive a Tosa certification diploma that indicates the test date, the score, and the proficiency level achieved. It contains a unique authentication code for online verification. Earners with a score of 551 and above are also eligible to receive a Credly digital badge.

Score Proficiency Level Award
1-350 Beginner Certificate of Completion
351-550 Basic Certificate of Completion
551-725 Productive Diploma and Credly Digital Badge
726-875 Advanced Diploma and Credly Digital Badge
876-1000 Expert Diploma and Credly Digital Badge

Preparing for a Certification Exam

Reaching a productive level or higher typically requires around 150 hours of training and hands-on practice with Generative AI, depending on prior knowledge and learning format. To prepare for the Tosa exam, we recommend that learners:

Utilize the Tosa Exam Blueprint

Utilize the Tosa Exam Blueprint to identify the skills and knowledge required to earn the certification at the expected proficiency level.

Take a Tosa practice assessment

Take a Tosa practice assessment to get familiar with the platform and question types and to identify skill gaps. It's adaptive, takes approximately 40 minutes, and provides a detailed skill report.

Each Tosa certification includes two practice assessments to be used as a pre-course assessment and a post-course assessment. The pre-assessment helps determine the initial skill gaps to cover during the course. The post-assessment allows for progress measuring and ensures exam readiness.
